Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. The gathering of friends and family, bounteous food to share around a table, and often helping serve and sit at tables with those without family or a safe place to be. All of it somehow speaks to the heart.
Black Friday? Not my favorite. I learned a number of years ago that while for some, it’s a festive tradition, I find the crowds, the noise, the decidedly un-thanksgiving behavior is not for me, even for a bargain. Black Friday is named for retailers because it is the day they make the most money and put their balance sheets in the black. For the rest of us, perhaps it’s red Friday?
I’m inviting you to consider both Thanksgiving and the days after in a different way this year. My gratefulness for the United Methodist Church, its history and its future, continues to expand. We have much work to do before General Conference this spring, and the Mainstream UMC Board and I invite you to give a gift for this work that is vital for our church to stay open and welcoming to all.
This invitation doesn’t have any promises of a blow-out sale or a quick fix to a complex challenge, it simply offers you an opportunity to share our passion to help make a difference for the future of our church!
